Overall, this is a great book for kids to read for school or for their own entertainment. It’s full of adventure and suspense, with lots of sneaking around, spying and occasionally running for one’s life. It draws attention to the collective responsibility to safeguard heritage, whether it’s your own or someone else’s, ensuring a captivating experience for its young and impressionable audience. I can say with certainty that “Secrets in the Islands” by Lauren de Leeuw would be a great addition to any school, public, or home library.

Great start to a new series

Got this book at Christmas and really enjoyed it. The main character Sami, although smart, still had to work to overcome her fears with the help of her new friend. As well, there is a couple of clever twists nearer the end that I never saw coming about the two villains. The setting is in the same area that the writer has actually lived and visited so there are lots of cool facts about Haida Gwaii worked into the story. Archaeology and adventure are the two perfect things to put together. Already did research on Sami’s next adventure in Ethiopia. Can’t wait for the book to come out. It looks like the start of a really good series.
